Our history

The business was founded in 1987 by Billy Ferries, who remained at the helm for just over 30 years, eventually selling the company as a going concern in 2018 to Martyn Powell, the current owner and director. Billy remains with the company working alongside Martyn as an executive designer.

The business started from a small, family-owned workshop. In the early days Billy divided his time between designing kitchens and playing semi-professional football with Ross County Football Club in Dingwall. Eventually the growing demand for his kitchens meant the football had to take a back seat and a relocation to bigger premises was needed.

Billy moved the business to a larger rented facility on Blarliath Industrial Estate, Tain in 1991.

Just two years later, in 1993, with demand for Billy’s kitchens going from strength to strength a further move was required to a purpose-built showroom just a few yards away on the same estate in Tain.

The company has a reputation for excellence in kitchen design and installation across the Scottish Highlands and beyond, and has expanded its operations to include the design, supply and installation of bespoke bedroom furniture, dressing rooms and walk-in wardrobes.

Ferries Kitchens & Bedrooms became a limited company in 2002, having occupied the current premises on Blarliath Industrial Estate in Scotland’s oldest royal burgh, Tain on the south shore of the Dornoch Firth, for more than 25 years.

Our showroom in Tain is home to 12 stunning, innovative and beautiful displays with countless more samples of door ranges, colour options, worktops, handles and accessories to inspire you and whet your appetite.

We have always believed it is important that our clients visit us in our showroom to see, feel and appreciate the quality of the actual product first hand, but if you are unable to get to our showroom, we are more than happy to bring samples to you in your home. Either way, nothing beats a real time experience.

Our team are on hand Monday to Saturday to help guide you through the many design and product options we have available, but if you prefer to be left to stroll through the showroom at your own pace, then that’s fine too. Whichever you prefer a cup of tea or coffee awaits your arrival.

Meet the Senior Team

Martyn Powell

Owner, Director & Designer

After leaving school in 1980 he joined Schreiber Furniture in Runcorn, Cheshire, completing an apprenticeship as a wood machinist, manufacturing kitchen and bedroom cabinetry. Throughout the 80’s & 90’s he accepted various roles and positions rising through the ranks to become a Senior Manager for Howdens Joinery (Formally part of the MFI Group).

As the Technical Design Manager, Martyn was responsible for a team of nine designers developing new kitchen, bedroom and lounge furniture for the organization.

After 28 years with Howdens Joinery, he left to join a small family run kitchen manufacturer to help develop and grow their business, before deciding to re-locate to the Scottish Highlands, purchasing Ferries K&B in Tain.

Martyn has a hands-on approach to his business, enjoying working closely with clients to create their dream kitchen or bedroom. His focus is on company development and looking at future trends to make sure Ferries Kitchens and Bedrooms is always at the forefront of design and innovation.

Martyn has over 40 years’ experience working in the kitchen industry at all levels.

Aimee Powell

Showroom Manager

Aimee is university educated and holds a BSc (HONS) in Environmental Resource Management & Zoology. Since leaving University in 2014, Aimee has held a variety of positions in different industries including animal welfare, sales & aftersales, kitchen manufacturing and as an assistant manager at a farm shop/delicatessen responsible for eleven employees, before settling on her multi-tasking role at Ferries K&B.

Aimee manages all aspects of the smooth running of the showroom, from the initial meet and greet with new clients, order placement, installation coordination, website and social media development, office administration, aftersales and much, much more. Aimee is the face of our business and the backbone of our senior team.

Aimee has over 10 years’ experience within the industry.

Billy Ferries

Executive Designer

Billy studied kitchen design whilst being employed by Moben Kitchens. In 1987 he took the decision to use the knowledge and experience he had gained to set up his own kitchen retail business, founding Ferries Kitchens.

During this period, Billy also played semi-professional football with Ross County Football club, but with the growing success of Ferries Kitchens his football years came to a close.

After three decades of running a very successful business he decided to hang-up his boots for a second time to hand over the reins to Martyn.

Billy continues to play an important role within the company as executive designer, working closely with clients to inspire them with his infectious enthusiasm for kitchens & bedrooms. His wealth of knowledge in the industry and in retail is invaluable to the company.

Billy also has over 40 years experience in the kitchen industry.

The Senior team at Ferries Kitchens and Bedrooms have a combined industry knowledge and experience of nearly 100 years.
